Jerusalem Holidays

I like learning gemerah, mostly because of the bright hot spotlight it shines on the absurdities of modern Jewish life. Another of my favorite examples. All year round, the perushim of Jerusalem were careful to avoid contact with people who were lenient with the laws of holiness. On holidays, though, the rules changed and the less stringent people were accepted by the persuhim with love. Contrast this with the behavior of the totally Torah-true types in our own day.
